The School on the Hill A Story of the Lawrencetown Schools Volume 1

The School on the Hill, Volume One, is the exploration of the who, when, where and why of the Lawrencetown School System from the perspective of author David Whitman. This historical account takes place in the small community of Lawrencetown, located in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia. To tell a story of such magnitute can be an overwhelming task, and therefore, this historical account encompasses a variety of memories, stories, photographs and historical accounts from a vareity of different people. Many of these contributors are former students spanning from many many years ago, to students who were in the last class to graduate from the school in 1992.

The School on the Hill discusses early schooling and carries on throughout the 1920’s through to the 1990’s when the school eventually closed. Numerous photographs are included of the school and its evolution throughout the years, as well as various class photos taken by Mrs. Erdine Maude Harris.

No matter the community, the place or people involved, a school plays a central role in the life of an area. It influences descisions and future plans. It respects the past and prepares for the future. Schools are integral in the lives and stories of children.

Every child has a story about school. This is David Whitman’s story as he shares voices from the past.
